Saúl Castro

BIOGRAPHY

Saul Castro was born and is based in Oaxaca, Mexico, and his practice is shaped by the region’s rich artistic traditions alongside his own evolving visual language. His early artistic career was informed by studies at the Fine Arts School of the Universidad Autónoma Benito Juárez of Oaxaca (1989–1993), an apprenticeship in the workshop of Plastic Arts “Rufino Tamayo” (1995–1998), and a collaboration with Master Artist Shinzaburo Takeda on a mural in Japan (1993). These formative experiences provided a foundation rooted in both technical rigor and creative exploration.

Working across oil painting, printmaking, and sculpture, Castro develops a layered body of work that brings together material investigation, symbolism, and narrative suggestion. Recurring forms and motifs move fluidly between mediums, functioning as a visual vocabulary rather than fixed symbols and inviting open interpretation.

Castro’s work is marked by a strong sensitivity to surface and structure. Whether through the richness of oil, the graphic language of printmaking, or the physical presence of sculpture, his compositions balance precision and intuition, detail and restraint.

His use of color, form, and texture reflects an ongoing dialogue between traditional influences and contemporary expression. Rooted in place yet expansive in scope, Castro’s work engages universal themes of identity, memory, and human experience.

Castro has exhibited internationally and is recognized for the material depth, symbolic resonance, and thoughtful construction of his work. His practice continues to evolve across mediums, offering work that is both grounded and exploratory.
