Laura Bueno

Laura Bueno, Visual Artist

Laura Bueno (b. 1966) is a contemporary visual artist who lives and works in Mexico City. She attended the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking La Esmeralda in Mexico City, where she graduated with a degree in Literature in 1990.

Shortly after graduation, Bueno elected to pursue her passion for Anthropology, joining the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) in Mexico. Her work with the Institute has led her to be intimately involved with the preservation of the patrimony of Mexican archaeological sites and artifacts around the country. For example, at INAH, Bueno has created reproductions of important archeological pieces found in La Venta, a pre-Columbian archaeological site of the Olmec civilization located in the present day Mexican state of Tabasco.

Today, Laura Bueno continues to be involved in the restoration of archaeological works in Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Villahermosa, Tabasco. She collaborates closely and regularly with various museums, and is passionate about fostering the development of exhibitions of Pre-Hispanic art.

As a visual artist, Bueno’s paintings are influenced by her personal and professional experiences traveling around Mexico, as well as her intimate knowledge of the country’s archeology and cultural/historical heritage. As an artist, she works painstakingly and intuitively to build complex compositions that exude a reverence for nature, animals and other living things that inhabit harmonious, magical landscapes.

Her unique professional trajectory, merging the worlds of art, anthropology and archaeology, have led her to exhibit her art throughout Mexico, both in solo and group exhibitions. Works by Laura Bueno are held in the permanent collection of the Salvador Zubiran National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition in Mexico City, and are also on exhibit at the Soho Gallery in the City of Merida, Yucatán. In addition, Laura Bueno’s works are also featured in the largest outdoor Gallery in the world, the Garden of Art in Mexico City, where the artist has held a membership for over 20 years.
