The Consulate General of Mexico in Houston, the Mexico Tourism Board and Serrano Gallery are Co-Hosting an Opening Reception for the Exhibition Rolando Rojas: New Works on September 13, 2017.

Rolando Rojas, a visual artist with a growing international presence, has been an enduring and steadfast presence in the Mexican visual arts scene for decades. An opening reception celebrates the one-year anniversary of the artist’s studio presence in Houston and showcases an exhibit of the artist’s most recent work. The event provides guests with an opportunity to meet the artist in person and view recent work in a vibrant setting, in the heart of the Washington Arts District/Sawyer Yards art complex. Rolando Rojas: New Works will be on view September 6 through September 18, 2017.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born in Oaxaca, Rolando Rojas is inspired by the legends, stories, and myths of the Zapotec culture that have permeated his life in Mexico. In his colorful paintings, Rojas portrays this mythical world and interweaves it with deeply personal narratives formed out of the artist’s own experiences, present and past, many of which are drawn from his childhood growing up in Tehuantepec. Recurring motifs, such as the cosmos, the sun and the moon, and a series of mysterious creatures (both real and imaginary) inspired by his grandmother’s storytelling, are hallmarks of his paintings and prints, as are universal themes of fertility, sensuality and music.
