The Glassell School of Art Museum of Fine Arts, Houston 

Magical and Mystical Oaxaca showcases the vibrant art and culture of Oaxaca. In collaboration with the Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the exhibition aims to foster cultural exchange and provide visitors with a unique opportunity to engage with Oaxacan art.

This exhibition features the art of four Oaxacan artists whose work explores the complexities of identity at the intersection of the real and the imaginary, tradition, and modernity. The works of Rolando Rojas, Didier Mayes, Saul Castro and Ixrael Montes creates a powerful and compelling exhibit that celebrates the diversity and richness of Oaxacan contemporary art. Through their use of color, texture, and symbolism, each of these artists offers a distinctive perspective on the rich artistic and cultural heritage of the region. Together, these artists pay homage to the world legacy of their predecessors such as Tamayo, Morales, Nieto, and Toledo, and showcase the enduring and innovative nature of contemporary Mexican art. 


JOURNEY TO OAXACA:
VISUAL TESTIMONIES OF AN IMMERSIVE CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

The exhibit showcases photographs, artworks, and other visual documentation that captures the experiences and impressions of participants in the Glassell School of Art's cultural exploration program in Mexico. The initiative immerses artists and art enthusiasts in the local culture, where they are introduced to the artistic legacy of Oaxacan Art and learn about the unique practices of Oaxacan artists.

ALALIMON*

The two compositions of “Journey to Oaxaca” are a symphony of styles, blending seamlessly to create a cohesive whole. Each of the 16 participant artists, were assigned specific sections within the canvas, allowing them to showcase their individual talents while contributing to the collective vision. These pieces were directed and finished by the four Masters: Rolando Rojas, Didier Mayés, Ixrael Montes and Saúl Castro.

WOMEN PRINTMAKERS OF OAXACA
Orton Gallery. Third Floor. 
Co-curated by Misayo Tsutsui and Mayuko Ono Gray. 

This exhibit highlights the artistic prowess of women printmakers from Oaxaca. The exhibition will showcase a diverse range of printmaking techniques, including woodcut, etching, and lithography. It will feature artworks that reflect the unique perspectives and artistic expressions of women in the Oaxacan art scene.

We are honored to have Dr.  Roberto Gonzales as our guest speaker. Mr. Gonzales has dedicated his life to studying and promoting art, particularly Oaxacan art. His expertise and deep understanding of these artistic creations' cultural significance will provide valuable insights throughout this event.

The featured artists, Rolando Rojas, Saul Castro, Ixrael Montes, and Didier Mayes, will share their stories, techniques, and cultural influences and offer a unique perspective on Oaxacan art and culture. The artist talks will provide an opportunity for visitors to engage with the artists in a Q&A format.
